Why Do People Fail At Affiliate Marketing?
64There are a lot of reasons that can contribute to someone failing at affiliate marketing, I think the biggest reason of all is the work involved. A lot of people start following the techniques to promote a product but quickly throw in the towel because of frustration, even lack of education. Affiliate marketing isn't easy and it won't make you rich overnight. It takes time and a lot of effort on your part to get anywhere with it.
Let's take a look at some of the top reasons as to why people are failing at affiliate marketing:
No Motivation
Feeling Mislead Or Scammed
Not Enough Time To Invest
Distractions
Stress
Confusion
Overwhelmed
Lazy
Not Enough Education/Knowledge
My Story
Before I start writing about these reasons I want to share my own story. Back around 2005 – 2006 I started researching the “work at home niche” I wanted a work at home job, not a business opportunity. A lot of websites were misleading or the information was so much to take in that I got confused. Being a newbie I got distracted and frustrated easily.
The first program I purchased was a website that was advertising a work at home typing job, it was 49.99. The story on the page and pictures of fancy cars and a mansion pulled me in. At the time I honestly thought it was a work at home typing job, where I would be typing data into a form. Sadly I was mislead, the program was an educational tool to show you how to use Adwords and clickbank to make money online. I thought this might be alright, up until I started spending money on Adwords. The few weeks I worked on the program I did make 2 sales, but both sales resulted in refunds, so I never saw the money. At this point I felt scammed and gave up.
With this happening I avoided work at home until 2008. February of 2008 I had quite my almost 3 year call center job due to stress at the time going on in my personal life. I was unemployed for 8 months with no type of income but my savings. It was terrible, I had credit card debt adding up because I couldn't pay my bills. I started looking into work at home topics again. The first thing I did was buy a membership giving me access to a survey database. I once again got upset because most of the websites I couldn't signup to because I was in Canada... I also got even more angry because at the time I didn't realize all the things involved with online surveys. These were things like, payment threashold, not always being eligible for surveys, etc...
After this I bought The Average Joe Income Package and Profit Lance. Both websites taught me some useful information. However I lost interest because my clickbank sales were refunded on a constant basis.
This is my third attempt at trying to make money online from blogging. I am going to try and not spend any money starting out to see if I can make any money and how much. I have gained a great deal of education from participating in online forums and reading and watching youtube videos. Now that I have a bit more knowledge I am more confident that I will eventually make some money blogging.
Why People Fail In Detail
Now that my story is shared I want to continue discussing the reasons why people fail at affiliate marketing.
No Motivation – I lacked motivation before and it won't get you anywhere. If you are going to succeed in affiliate marketing you need motivation to keep going, and the know how. People need to understand you won't get rich overnight and you won't make guaranteed cash right away. It can take months before you see your first affiliate sale. Let your motivation be that you want to earn income online and make it your own work at home business.
Feeling Mislead or Scammed – I already felt mislead and scammed on more then one occasion, so I know how hard it can be to try and continue working from home. My advice is before you buy something advertising as a job or a program that is going to teach you work at home techniques. Find some reviews, ask advice in forums and decide if you REALLY need to buy this product. Some products are worth it and others are not. The last thing you need is to spend money and feel like you lost time and effort. Also keep it mind you can learn a lot of FREE information online by visiting article websites, youtube, and work at home forums.
Not Enough Time To Invest – If you have a full time offline job it can be hard to try and learn affiliate marketing. If you have the free time or are willing to invest lots of your free time into this, then its ok. When I first started I was working full time at a call center, which is one reason why I lost motivation quickly. Starting out it may require you to invest a lot of time. I know some days I work on my blog and many other things for up to 10 hours a day. Other days its less. Once you start making sales and get things off the ground you can invest slightly less time. But even then be careful, I think its important to just set up a schedule and work whatever time you can.
Distractions – If your house is always busy and on the go I suggest setting times when to work. Distractions at worse can cause you to lose track of what your doing and then in some circumstances you might avoid the work for a few days. When I work on my blog I try and be the first one up to do it or wait until others are at work. This way its quiet and easy for me to stay focused. You also can avoid distractions by working in a room with a door away from the noise.
Stress – Trying to work on your blog and affiliate marketing can be hard if life stress or personal stress get in the way. I have had days where I would work for 2 hours then had to stop what I was doing because of stress bothering me. If your stressed you can try to work through it, or just don't work that day. Relax and come back refreshed and give it another shot.
Confusion – Let's say you've been learning about affiliate marketing for a good week but your lost and don't understand a big chunk of the work involved. If you are confused join a forum and get your questions answered. Don't sit stuck trying hard to figure it out and end up getting lost in the sea of information. Confusion can cause its own issues, so be sure to just get the help you need if this happens.
Overwhelmed – When learning about affiliate marketing it is very easy to get overwhelmed and get information overload. I know a struggle I had was learning so much at once that I either got confused or just was having issues taking in all the information at once. Everyone has their own way to learn and process information. I think honestly it would be better to go slowly and learn everything piece by piece.
Lazy – Although being lazy doesn't always mean you are going to fail but it could mean a quick loss of motivation. Having a lazy day is one thing but if your lazy in general it can really interfere with trying to learn about affiliate marketing.
Not Enough Education/Knowledge – Its very important to learn not just the basics of affiliate marketing but how to make potential sales and what to do to get those sales. It really is a lot to learn and it won't be easy for everyone to learn. So keep a positive mind and just try your best!
The list could go on for reasons as to why someone might fail at affiliate marketing but these seem like some of the most common reasons as to why someone might fail.
Affiliate Marketing Doesn't Have To Fail
I want to share some things I do to try and stay away from walking away too soon or giving up on affiliate marketing.
Make A Plan And Know Your Niche – Before you get involved with affiliate marketing, decide what types or affiliate products you want to promote. Go to forums that offer work at home or affiliate marketing information and learn what you can. Also ask questions and join in on discussions.
Set A Schedule – If it is necessary make a to-do list and make a schedule for the days you can work on what your doing. If you miss a day here and there its not a huge deal. Start out working when you can and when you want to work. I work almost every day, but this also includes researching some days and actually working a bit harder on others.
Understand That Work Is Involved And Time – Don't expect to start making a ton of money right away. It could be a long time before you see any results to your hard work. That is another big important thing to remember, A LOT of work is involved to get anywhere. And you can't just throw up ads expecting people to buy, that is not how it works.
As you can see affiliate marketing is not for everyone. It is a long learning process that takes time and quite a bit of effort on your part. However, don't let slow points or no sales get you down, put your best foot forward and do your best. With time, effort and hard work it will pay off.
